At this year's SC, Stefan Kosnac, Martin Wenzel, Steffen Lammel, and Felix Zahn attended the conference as SCinet student volunteers. Sarah Neuwirth, PhD student at the CAG, was selected as the SCinet Student Volunteers Co-Chair volunteering all year to organize the student program. Furthermore, she presented a research poster. Juri Schmidt was part of the SC16 Student Volunteers program and participated in the Doctoral Showcase. In addition, the Extoll research was presented at our booth at the SC16 in Salt Lake City, UT, US.

Sarah Neuwirth attended the 28th International Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance Computing (SBAC-PAD 2016) in Los Angeles, CA, USA and presented her research paper entitled "Using Balanced Data Placement to Address I/O Contention in Production Environments". Her paper has received a Best Paper Award.

The 1st European Summer School on Functional Verification took place at the Institute of Computer Engineering of the Heidelberg University. It was organized by the Computer Architecture Group and supported by the Cadence Academic Network. The Summer School brought together students and researchers with functional verification experts to educate them with state of the art functional verification techniques. A direct GPU to GPU communication using EXTOLL “Galibier” FPGA boards and NVIDIAs K20 GPU could be demonstrated with very low latency of 3.4us. Thomas Krenn AG and Boston Server Systems partnered with EXTOLL for the demonstration of high performance server and interconnect technology.

DEEP LogoStart of the EU Framework 7 Project DEEP (www.deep-project.eu) with the CAG as research partner. Goal is to build a prototype of a parallel computing system, based on the cluster-booster concept from JSC (link). The EXTOLL interconnect technology (link) was selected as the fastest interconnect for the booster accelerator using Intel MICs (link) for calculation.

The 3rd Symposium of the HyperTransport Center of Excellence and the Second International Workshop on HyperTransport Research and Applications (WHTRA) took place in Mannheim on the 8th and 9th of February. The complete event including invited talks, paper presentations, and an evening event were a great success and the conference was again an ideal platform for scientific exchange within the area of HyperTransport and HPC. The presentations of the 3rd Symposium of the HyperTransport Center of Excellence, the Second International Workshop on HyperTransport Research and Applications (WHTRA), and the Picture Gallery are now available on our websites.

The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology approved a grant for the EXTOLL project of approximately $500k. The project will start in September 2010. More information (in German) is available in the press release.

The CAG installed a new Cluster System named PEAC. The System features 16 nodes (HP DL165G5) equipped with AMD CPUs and a proprietary HyperTransport attached network. The network is based on CAG's own network research and achieves a half round trip latency of 1.2us between two nodes. The cluster will be used to develop, test and evaluate the software environment for the EXTOLL network. More information on the EXTOLL web page.

The Computer Architecture Group is again present at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Dresden, Germany. Research projects and developments both of the Computer Architecture Group and of the HyperTransport Center of Excellence (HTCE) will be shown in booth B19-B22, which is jointly operated by AMD and the Computer Architecture Group.
