Fast Hardware Barrier Synchronisation for a Reliable Interconnection Network

Abstract:

Barrier synchronisation is a commonly used task in parallel programs. All threads of a parallel program must wait at the barrier until all other threads reached the barrier too, before they can resume its work. Since all threads part of the barrier are blocked during the synchronisation, the barrier synchronisation time has to be minimised. The goal of this diploma thesis is the design and the implementation of a hardware barrier synchronisation for the Extoll network chip. The result of this thesis is a highly optimised Verilog implementation of a hardware barrier synchronisation. This thesis presents also a revised and optimised version of the Extoll link port.
